I am considering installing the TPIS headers on my late '86 also. I want to keep the EGR and AIR system for emissions compliance. Anyone got pics of how it is done? I read in an earlier post on this subject that you need an EGR tube from GM that gets welded to the headers. Anyone know the part number? how about some pics of the EGR/AIR system installed on headers?
87 has the same connector as 86 does. 88 and up has the flange.
Scorp, I know that you know L98 motors as well as anyone on this forum. But I am pretty sure the EGR pipe with the torx bolts on both ends was introduced in '87. My late '86 had the old metal accordion pipe style with the bogus clamp seal that started leaking. I changed it to an '87 manifold and pipe to solve the problem. When I ordered gaskets for an '87 to complete the job, I got the right parts as well.
I'm still not clear on which EGR pipe the TPIS headers use - the early one or the '87 to ? pipe with the torx bolts.

What do you want me to say? :) My 87's manifolds were never off and it had the '86 clamp style connector on the exhaust manifold and 2 torx at the intake manifold. Maybe it was a mid-87 thing? My car was built I think around November of 86.
If you know yours have never been off, then it sounds like it must have been mid-87. :yesnod: Just when you think you know what changed from year to year, another surprise comes along...
You must keep the air tubes in order to pass at least the visual smog check....get headers with the airtubes..that way you will stay safe within the guide lines set forth in the smog rules......just not worth messing with...
Just my thoughts... :smash:
Wheelman. When i purchased my headers from TPIS I had the option to special order them with the EGR but no air tubes. vetracer the TPIS come with the old style EGR
