When rebuilding my L98 for my '88 vert, I bought a moving assembly with a 168 tooth flexplate. I didn't realize that I should have chosen 153 but the deed is done and the engine is in the car with trans bolted on. So now I'm looking for a starter and found one thread describing issues, from 2012. Could anyone guide me regarding what starter to choose and what to do about the dustpan?

Your '88 if original starter would have been the first year for the 'denso. What starter do you actually have? Is it the original? The converter cover is the original? I don't know about modifying the original 'denso for the 168 tooth but it would be good to know what you have for a starter now.
So I bought a mini starter that will work for 168 tooth. But the problem is the dust shield. The opening is for 153T. Is there an alternative dust shield; what vehicle has a late eighties 700R4 with 168T?
All you have to do is trim that shield. I had to trim mine a bit for a gear reduction starter...
@FostersPerformance Do you think it's better to trim the stock one or buy something like this for around $45? I'm just thinking that it might be better to have the stock available for someone, someday, that might be doing an NCRS restoration...?

Thats up to you, but i don't think those original shields are very desirable for the restoration crowd. There's millions of them out there. Plus you'd probably be lucky to get 20 bucks for it.

Thanks, just the practical guidance I was looking for!
