I had a 383 CFI with Edelbrock heads a Comp roller cam and a Summit Racing rotating assembly kit years ago in my 84. I had an X-ram intake and I had the throttle bodies bored out. I also had the "Cop car" injectors. I can't remember what the flow rating was on them. I ran the whole thing with a 7747 ECU. To be honest I was disappointed. It never made the power I wanted. I had it tuned by a guy on this forum who really knew CFI tuning and it ran pretty well. It just didn't have the power I wanted. I ended up selling everything and LS swapping.
The CFI just doesn't flow enough air for larger displacement. I really wanted around 450 hp. I just couldn't get it with CFI.
Why not source the parts yourself instead of buying a "kit" ? ... Better yet , let your machine shop guide you in the selection , the block needs to be clearanced for the connecting rods at the pan rails anyway .
Ditto what C409 said.
Best thing I did was stop by first, in person, and discuss the moving assembly; ie externally balanced? stroke? deck clearance?
Also make sure to discuss history of the engine. Did it spin a bearing, have shavings spread through oil passages? You want to make sure that block is a good candidate for an overbore and just how much prep and cleaning they need to do. At least with the shop I went to, they wouldn't touch it unless I brought the whole rotating assembly; so better to discuss that now.
Regarding kit, there are lots of options and these are all determined by the rest of the components and choices for the engine. E.g. manual or auto trans (determines flywheel or flexplate)? and what size? single or dual rear main seal? The choices you make for rotating assembly will constrain your options down the road, so better to do your homework now and plan it all out before you spend the $$$ at the shop.
