Default L98 vs. LT1

All things considered if both cars are in the same condition including mileage.
Between a 1991 L98 or a 1992 LT1. Which one would you pick???
Taking in to account the opti-spark and more horsepower compared to the less hp L98 and no opti-spark. Also isnt it easier to change spark plugs in the L98???? So which is the better most trouble free and easier to maintain vette the L98 or LT1 and which one would you pick?????????????????

Is the glass half empty or half full? I have the L98 and if the plugs are easier to change, I DON'T want to try it on an LT1! Goo dluck in your choice and enjoy the ride

All things considered being the same with both cars I would still choose witch ever car I liked best because they are both good motors I might lean a little to the 92 just because it is a year newer.

I have a cherry '87 L98 in the neighbors garage (he had extra space for it) :)

I also own a '94 6 speed.

I used to own a '91 L98 automatic.

Now, as far as interior designs go, I like the black on white gauges instead of the gray on orange color of the 91.

As far as engines go, the '94 would have run circles around the '91, and though I haven't had an '87/94 grudge match, I expect to beat the asthmatic L98 handily.

Enginewise, there is NO comparison. The LT1 is far superior despite some of its mechanical drawbacks (spark plugs, optispark). If you worry about moisture damage, buy a Meziere water pump. Thats what I did...

LT1 all the way.

Lt1 has lighter pistons, reverse cooled heads, better intake manifold, an optispark, and some other worthless nonsence

It amazes me-
L98 owners say the L98 is better than the LT1

Lt1 owners say the LT1 is better than the LS1

:banghead:

The Lt1 is superior to the L98 overal from a design point of view
More gas effiecent, cleaner, powerful etc
an opti and intake is all that really seperates us-
opti problems are over rated. its like a clutch. it will go every 80k miles. deal with it.

Ls1 owns us all

If your looking for a driver, not strictly a race car (where, you'll change everything anyway), just buy the newest, lowest milage vette with the options you want, that you can afford.

they all have their ups and downs. I think the LT1 will be cheaper to mod, if you stick to around 370rwhp, after that, it evens out a bit. A total race car would be similar money to make.

Maybe changing the spark plugs is more difficult on the Lt1 than it is on the L98, but when changing injectors, it is definitely the other way around.

Heres my take having owned and modded a 90 6 speed coupe and now having an LT4. The 91 L98 is the last, and best design of the the SBC and L98. The bugs and flaws are worked out. The 92 is the 1st year of the LT1. My Mom has a 92 vert 6 speed. I cant tell a nickel worth of fit and finish between hers and my 90. My 96 is another story. The late L98 has lightweight pistons too and decent rods as well. I bet theres not 2 tenths difference between 2 identical cars (auto vs auto/ manual vs manual). With 2k in mods my 90 ran mid 13s at 105 mph with a few 106 trap speeds. This was at the cruise in when other LT1 autos were trapping at 101 and 102mph. If it were ME and for my use I would choose the 91 hands down for the type of driving I do.

Someone mentioned something about gas mileage. My 90 got 29.7 mpg on no less than 8 700mile round trips from Mo to East Tn. My Lt4 doesnt get near that, and its pretty much stock.

I don't think the General would have designed the LT1 with the intention of it being inferior to the previous engine

The General didnt intend for alot of things to happen but they did nonetheless.

If you want a cheap setup to beat on every day, go with the L98 - that's exactly why I bought mine. It's not as fast as my friend's 96, but tuneups are a hell of a lot cheaper.

Keep in mind the LT-1 is also much more modern in terms of engine controls. It's designed to take L98 technology to the next level. I wouldn't say the L98 is inferior to the LT-1 only because technology has its drawbacks (maintenance etc) But then again, I still don't consider carburetors inferior to EFI only because the advantages and disadvantages almost cancel each other out.

If money weren't a factor, though, i'd take the '91. All around mix of performance, and maintainability (if that's a real word. if it's not, I just invented it! :D )
