Default Steering column lock plate won’t compress enough

So trying to get the lock place and c clip back in place.

telescoping shaft keeps pulling out. Np I took a bolt that fit, cut it at the length I needed and cut a slot to use a screw driver to tighten it so to push the lock in place so it won’t move

now when I put the lock plate press in place and tighten to push the lock plate down to put the c clip in it seems like it bottoms out before really getting to the point I can put the clip in

it’s like it’s bottoming out and at that point even with the telescoping shaft locked it starts pulling out.

now these are the parts that came out of it (and it was really hard even getting the c clip out to begin with)

I’ve thought about grinding down the lip sticking up on the lock ring just enough to give me the clearance I need.

thoughts?

and this column has definitely been apart before so who knows if the parts are original or not

Go back into the column as 'deep' as you were originally and start the reassemble again. Why were you into the column? Did you save the upper column plastic or needed to buy new? You can't assume just because it was apart previously that parts aren't correct.

Just (2 months ago) did this on daughters 84. A tremendously tedious process first time through.

Not sure how far u went in. Did you reassemble the knuckle correctly? Is the telescoping wedge in the proper direction?

For mine, it was a barely able to fit scenario. The spring did not compress far past the c clip groove. Yours looks pretty close. Sure you are not bottomed out on your tool?

Figured out what’s going on. The lock plate is bottoming out on the cruise/turn signal lock pin part of the upper column housing.

I can’t even get the point of a pick between them.

Bingo!! Just used my dremel and ground off just a touch off the face of the outer housing where the lock pin comes up and went on perfectly

obviously something went in different. (unless you replaced parts maybe?)

hopefully the rest of it is working as it should. 👍

no it was almost impossible to originally get the c clip out so I’m thinking the column was busted at some point and they replaced the upper part with a repro that wasn’t exactly correct fitting.

next problem seems the pin is too short. The screw bottome out befor it pushes the keyway

I’m thinking I have the wedge oriented correctly. I had every thing assembled but couldn’t get the telescope lever to mount to the screw as the screw was too far out. Took it back apart and this is how I somehow put it in 😳

now, these are the same parts that came out of it and worked fine before. All this to tighten up those tilt screws lol. So not sure how it’s supposed to be and the service manual shows it like the first pic.

as you can see the screw is all the way in and not moving the wedge at all. If I pick it up holding the wedge in place I can shake it and hear the pin sliding between the screw and the wedge

Well, not factory correct but cut the head off a tiny Allen head steel bolt from my R/C days which is the correct diameter and take up just the right amount of slack to correctly engage the wedge with the screw in but not bottomed out.
