I took the car out for it's first drive and the power steering feels extremely underpowered. I'm using an the standard LS power steering pump (GM part number 84629501) with a 6" pulley and the C4 rack that came in my 1995. Does anyone know if the LS power steering pump doesn't put out enough pressure? If moving to a smaller pulley on the pump will help it push more pressure? Or if I need a different pump?
I did put a 1.5:1 steering quickener on the car, but the lack of power steering feels more than just the quickener.
My stock c5 pump works just fine in my 84 ls swap car. Even after I installed a 25% underdrive crank pulley it is still fine. Just a tad heavier at idle speeds, but it only took me a day or two to get used to it. I don't have big and wide meats up front though, they are 245/45/17s.
I believe that anything regarding PS pump, the rack & pinion performance I'd reach out to TurnOne and have a discussion regarding modifications, pulley diameter etc. They I'm quite sure offer various orifices that control rate/effort etc. I don't know of anyone local that has any experience with the 1.5:1 'quickener'.
