I recently just acquired a 1984 Corvette. I am currently working on the instrument cluster and would like to know if I could possibly use the top board from a 1985 instrument cluster as a replacement for a top board on a 1984 instrument cluster. My 1985 instrument cluster is giving me issues as when I turn on the blinker after changing to the LEDs that are commonly sold to brighten it, the whole instrument cluster blinks and the 1984 instrument cluster is completely dead from what I believe to be the top board having severe burn marks.
I did ask him actually, and he said the same thing about the ground issue or it's the power supply, or my 24 pin. He said in the 84's it's behind the instrument cluster and I'm trying to locate it, I know it's G201 that's the ground for the cluster. He said it's on the LH of the steering column I was searching back there and found some very dirty plugged in cords and I actually can see a not fully plugged in one too.
Check the ground pin in the gang-pin connector between boards. You'll find this is the first pin. If it's defective, it will look dark from overheating and the receiver will be loose, as it has lost it's "spring.". I had to bypass mine with a short wire soldered to the base of each pin, and then put together with insulated spade crimp terminals, so that it can be taken apart later, if needed. The blinking of the display is from the grounds going through the exterior turn signal bulbs to ground.
The G101 ground is located on the passenger side just in front of the door near the knee bolster. I had to pull back carpet and some of the plastic lower door molding to get to mine.
