My low coolant warning light went on thiis morning while I was warming up the car to go to work.I checked the recovery tank and added to it.No change.I drove to work and the temp never went over 200 and the heater worked fine.I got home this afternoon,I checked the coolant level in the raditor and it was fine,I just needed to top it off to the bottom of the neck(as per instructions on the car).No change the light is still on.Where is the sensor for this located and do they go bad, could it be hung up in the low level position?
Definitely check for leaks, but as far as the light goes: If the recovery tank becomes empty and you refill it, then it will take several cycles of heating the car up to operating temp and cooling off for the system to purge any air it sucked in from the tank being empty. When you warm the engine up, the coolant expands and some flows into the tank. When it cools the coolant in the tank is drawn back into the radiator. If there is no coolant in the tank, then air is drawn into the radiator, causing the low coolant light. Top off coolant in the radiator, fill tank to proper level, and warm the car up and let it cool several times and the air should be bled out which should turn the light off.
I had to replace my fill tank (the one near the fire wall on the passenger side) and the low coolant switch is in the tank. It seems to be a float switch because when I moved the new tank up and down you could hear the switch rattle. The connection for the switch is in the bottom of the tank and is hard to see.
