Default C4 Brake Options?

My 89 came with the J55 brakes & before I rebuild the front calipers, plus replace the pads & rotors, what options do I have for calipers if I want to still use 17” rims?

TPS Motorsports (and others) sell C5 front brakes to C4 kits.

C5 and C6 calipers will fit with adapters. You’d need rotors, pads, and brake lines to round out the kit. I would not recommend the “upgrade” unless you are willing to change the master cylinder to one with a larger bore diameter. I was not happy with the increased pedal travel after changing just the calipers. Since you have the J55 setup, I would stick with that and save the coin.

100% agree. Save some cash and stick with the J55. Make sure you rebuild your own calipers. Whatever you do......DO NOT buy rebuilt replacements from any chain parts store. They will give you JL9 calipers in error. Every time. Ask me how I know lol.

I was reading somewhere that the regular c5 brake calipers are the same as Z06 calipers except without the word “Corvette”. Is this correct? It seems kinda hard to believe but stranger things have happened….

Regular C5 calipers are the same as the Z06, Z06s are just red. I have C5 Z06 brakes.

You can use 17" rims with the C5/6 set up, you might have issues with the clearance of the face of the caliper to the spoke though.

While I have some aftermarket wheels for autocross tires, I still want to run the stock rims at times, it would be nice to know for sure what works & doesn’t work on an 89’s stock rims.
I’ve looked around for replacement heavy duty calipers but the right front isn’t available as a rebuilt exchange anymore so I guess I’ll need to learn to rebuild mine in the mean time. Anyone have a sure fire truck to stop the brake hose from bleeding out while I rebuild the caliper on the bench?

I used two tapered faucet washers and a bolt with a wing nut.

You will be required to run spacers for the stock 89 rim. The only factory C4 rim that does not require a spacer is the 5 spoke A-mold rims.
