Hello, I currently have a carb converted 84 with a performer manifold and 650 cfm carb. Im looking to get a cam that will be able to give me a street/strip performance gain. I currently have stock heads but id like a cam that would allow me some room for better heads in the future, i already have half the motor torn down, i just dont want to junk these heads as theyre in pretty damn good shape for how old they are, lifters, springs, rockers all look brand new. I believe they are the 626 heads. If anyone has any suggestions feel free to let me know

If you don't have the Z51 package the best thing to do is get a 3 .07 or higher rear gear. Do you have the 700r4 or manual trans?? With stock 624 heads you could run the old comp 268 HE cam or similar for a performance boost. I have a carbed 84 with Summit/Dart 152123 heads , mild stall converter and Isky solid lifter cam. True dual exhaust with factory exhaust manifolds. Runs pretty good!

700r4, no z51 package sadly i dont think, only option the car seems to have is the unfortunate bose audio system. Ill take a look at the 268 cam though

I would do exhaust, rear gear upgrade and then the cam swap. Your money and your choices though!
You won't gain much of anything with a cam on those heads... I'd also suspect you'd run into clearance issues going much higher in lift. The 268 would probably need a new retainer and springs to sneak by. IIRC stock they're done around .450 or so....

So i think im just gonna hold off until i get new heads, going to run the stock stuff a bit longer after spending so long getting it running decently, the plan was to do it one major component at a time but i think im just gonna hold off and build the whole thing at once than, and yeah the rear gearing is definetly an issue, thats gonna be awhile though before im able to change that out.
650 Carb is very good for your setup now. Any bigger and you'll get bog when you don't want it. Concentrate on the other things for bigger gains for your buck. You got the right path started with your last comment.

Currently after getting these head gaskets straightened out (whole reason i even considered a cam was because half the top end was torn down already) is a set of hedman long tube headers, currently have 3in SS midpipe back that its gonna be connected to, no cats. After that im probably gonna focus on rebuilding the entire suspension system, which than would probably involve the gearing but theres no point in adding power if you cant put it down 🙃 heres some pics for anyone interested, its a very rough project indeed After i got it running for the first time since '98 Gutted a bit painted the heads
c4 buddy, mine on the left

All 1984 Corvettes came standard with 3.07 rear gears, there was a 3.31 performance option, of which, only 410 cars were so equipped. So, you already have the most performance oriented Dana 36 gears that came from the factory....unless you could find/had the 3.31 gears. If you still feel the need for lower (higher number) rear gears, I would suggest looking for a Dana 44, rather than spending the time, money and effort on aftermarket gears for the D36! Good luck👍
