Default 1987 Corvette code 44

Hi, I bought a Corvette two weeks ago i've been working on it lately I almost got it working perfectly. Unfortunately, I'm getting a code 44 problem. this problem seems to occur intermittently it'll cause my car to lurch forward in first gear and I have to hold on to the brakes to keep it from bumping into anyone. Also, I smell gasoline around my car when it's running. My car also failed smog which is a high HC under 15mphs but everything else on smog passed. I appreciate any help in diagnosing this car.
list of things I've changed (All OEM)
  • MAF sensor
  • FPR
  • O2 sensor
  • MAF power relay
  • Knock sensor

Code 44 means the engine is running lean. Could be low fuel pressure, bad MAF, or bad O2 sensor

Right, but I replaced the MAF and 02 Sensor as well, Do you recommend anything else I change?

Have you checked fuel pressure? That would be the most logical next step I would think

I have, it read 20 psi when on, doesn't drop. Start the car (takes 5-10 seconds it cranks strong just hard to start when cold) then the psi reads 40+

The smell of fuel is sometimes caused by a bad fuel pressure regulator, take the vacuum line off of it and smell it, is there fuel in the vacuum line? Incorvetti is correct as well. Does it initially go to 40 and drop or is it just 20?? An injector balance test may also help, it will test the injectors operation as well as give a non exact idea of their performance.

A vacuum leak will also cause a lean condiiton. Air that gets in after the MAF is not measured so enough fuel is not added. Check all your vacuum lines.

No fuel smell in the vacuum line I also replaced it earlier, doesn't seem to be the problem. It initially goes to 20 on the on position and stays there. I'll test out the injectors soon.

I'll check those too, I'll probably just buy a handful of vacuum lines and replace them since they're like 40 years old anyways

So, if 20lbs is bad for stand by what could it be? Recommend I change the fuel pump check valve? fuel filter? charcoal canister?

Fuel pressure check is hook up the gauge, ignition on NO START (don't start the engine). After a second or two, the pressure should increase and stay around 35-40psi. Ignition off, should hold that pressure, maybe drop a psi or two in the next half hour.

Over time, the pressure will drop, the point is to check at ignition on as that is when the fuel pump will prime, key is the amount and that it holds.
