On a '92, can the resonator be removed and replaced with 2 seperate pipes or an "X" - "H" pipe in an effort to increase the sound output - without affecting the emissions??
I just removed the resonator on my 96 and replaced it with straight 3" pipes. Absolutely no change whatsoever. You'll have to go with new mufflers at least, if you want more sound.
I removed the resonator on my 94 six speed when the resonator developed a rattle. I replaced it with an "H" pipe. There is no difference in sound that I can tell. Hopefully there is no change in emissions either because I am in a controlled area. The emissions should stay the same since all of the changes being made are post catalytic converters.
In response to your question, if you are trying to make your car louder, removing the resonator won't do it. (If anything, the car is a little louder on the inside, but the exhaust note seems unchanged.)
My son already replaced the stock mufflers with Dynomax Super Turbo's. The sound note is definetly lower, but only marginally loader - just thought removal of the resonator might increase volume (sound)...
