Harmonic balancer issue?

Hi Guys,

I own C4 87 with 120k milage on. Today during periodic check I noticed that the remark on harmonic balancer is gone. Rubber looks ok, however I can see that on top of the balancer it's more inside than on the rest of the wheel. Does it mean that the outer part of the balanced turned somehow and remark is somewhere on the bottom? I have slight engine vibrations but not sure if this is caused by this. Your advice will be much appreciated.

They will fail with age. I had one where the outer ring slid back and started eating into the timing chain cover.

OK will replace it then and set timing from the scratch
One question - how do I keep the engine from turning when I remove/install the crank bolt? (I have automatic transmission)

Last time i checked even vehicles with auto transmissions have starters...

Assuming the parking pawl doesn't hold the engine stationary, remove the starter and have a buddy with a pry bar hold the flex plate teeth stationary.
