Hi all... Been awhile since I've been on here but know from many years back there were several people trying to put a manual steering rack in one of these cars.
I pondered and planned, measured and planned more. Well I couldn't be happier with the way this turned out.
For those that don't know I'm running a 582bbc for last 6 plus years. I primarily bracket race so it's detuned and runs 5.6@123 in 1/8 and has been 8.6@161mph. Car was 3300 and I'm 220lbs. Interior except back is full still has stereo and power everything. All motor.
Well I pulled the motor this fall and after thinking about it I really wanted to get rid of the power steering.. It was nice to have but it cluttered everything up and kept me from doing some other things.. Mainly a mechanical pump for the alcohol in run.
So yesterday and today my dad and I got to it. I drew the things up on CAD and he lathed out some couplers with 9/16-18 female and male 14x 1.5 thread on the other. The key to what I no wanted to do was move the rack forward about 6 inches so my mandrel drive would clear. I also chopped out the upper brace since I run a motor plate about 3 inches behind it anyways.
I put a cell up front, 80lbs less fuel, and a much smaller radiator.
We checked geometry raising and lowering the car and there is zero bump steer! I mean zero which is awesome. There key to that is making sure the pivot point of the rack and the a-arm is exactly at the same point. I'm within .125 inch. Secondly is putting the rack so the tie rods and exactly parallel to the a arms. That way when the suspension travels or bumps they move in the same arc. If they aren't then the wheels will toe in and out. My stock stuff used to move about 5/8. Now it's absolutely zero.
Well let me know if you can see the pictures. I haven't posted on here in awhile. 😂
Merry Xmas.
The coupler. Will be welded to ball joint
