Probably a VATS bypass. It would be turned to the same ohms that the key pellet should have so VATS will let the car start. Of course its been about 8 years since I had a C4 so my memory may be letting me down.
The only thing in early cars that share yellow & purple is for the VSS, follow the yellow & purple and see where it goes ... to the cluster or maybe towards the right/center of car to a larger connector (C237) which is a 15 terminal connector Do you have the FSM? 8-33-0 and that vicinity. Does the car have original dash and cluster ?
There's a lot going on under there. What doesn't work?
If 'yes they are' was meant to agree with purple & yellow:
Take a fresh look at the wire colors and if they're actually BROWN & YELLOW then post #2 is correct and it was done as a VATS control.

I will take a better look. I was searching for a module for my aftermarket remote control, which isn't working properly.
I turned the potentio around a few time (in the past) ... nothing changes.
I don't have a FSM... but ordered it. I have a Haynes manual, but it does'nt say anything about VATS
Dash and cluster are original, but someone was creative with the wiring.
Thank you so far.

The color of the wire is brown. So it should do something to VATS. However I turn it. It starts anyway.
I searched for my remote controle module, but I really cant find it.
Probably behind the DIC ?
