My vision for my 1995 c4 is to have the original head unit but have brand-spankin' new speakers that won't sound like 30-year-old garbage.
Am I able to have the cool head unit with the cd and cassette player AND have upgraded sound or do I need to have the ugly pioneer or whatever to have a better-quality sound.
Option 1 was to send the amps and CDM box to dr. Don to fix but I imagine the original Bose system sounds bad so option 2 was to get a fully upgraded system with awesome sound but it won't look nearly as awesome. I want to have the middle ground, but I can't find anything.
has anyone done this or has links that'll help me?
My vote is to install a modern double DIN setup, all new speakers, and an amp. A newer double DIN can be found that has no external buttons, and you can upload a "screensaver" image of your choice if you like, and it should blend in reasonably well.
There are some modern "retro" looking radios on the market now. Gives you the look of an older radio but with all the connectivity and performance of something newer.
I installed a Retrosound Grand Prix in mine, it blends in phenomenally in my opinion. I know you want to keep the stock head unit, but the only way (I know of) you could do that is if you bypassed it entirely and controlled your amp directly with an aux-in amp or Bluetooth amp.
I just replaced all of the speakers and head unit to my 94 coupe. I was going to send my Bose amps to get fixed, but the cost was higher than replacement and I didn't think I would be able to fix them correctly. I went with a reasonably priced Sony single DIN so I can use the pocket for my cell phone. Install was a bit of a pain as far as running wires, but not impossible.
I'm in the middle of doing this now. I've pulled the Bose equipment out and running new speakers, wires, amp, and small powered 8" sub. I'm using non-bose speaker enclosures so I can run normal 6x9s in the rear and 4x6s up front. Small Kenwood 45x4 amp for them going under the seat.
