I know zip about automatic transmissions, having been a 4-speed nut all my life. I recently purchased an '86 Vette Coupe with a 4L60 trans. I am not happy with the shifter, so I purchased a B&M Mega Shifter and I am preparing to graft it into the console. I have what is probably a really dumb question. The two cables attached to the shifter (picture below, shamelessly stolen from another poster on this site). One is to shift gears, and I am guessing the other is for the kickdown? I might add that currently, the trans will not go into Park, which I hope is a cable adjustment issue. Under acceleration, the 1st to 2nd shift is brutal. What causes this?
Other cable is for the lock in the steering column. If not modified to fit shifter youll have to modify the cable otherwise you wont be able to unlock the steering wheel and take the key out of ignition.
This is the Mega shifter in my 84. The second cable that goes to the steering column I just didn't use it. I did however use the cable that came with the shifter instead of the factory one. The bracket that attaches to the trans too. Pretty easy to get adjusted. I did have to modify the shifter just a little to get it to fit down in. This is the Mega shifter that's meant for a 3rd gen F-body.
That is a very nice installation, good work. Did you take any pictures during the installation?
Sorry I didn't take any other pictures. The shifter I got is part number 80692. I didn't use any of the brackets that came with the kit. All I had to do was cut off the front mounting tab on the shifter and then weld it back on so it lined up with the factory C4 hole. I got it in position and then tack welded the tab in the car. Then removed it to finish the weld. It wasn't a hard job at all. I installed this years ago. So it's possible there is something I'm forgetting but it was easily done on a Saturday afternoon. The only tricky part was fabbing a new bracket so I could use this with a 4L80e. The B&M bracket won't work with those transmissions. But you won't have that problem. Also I did use the B&M shift cable and adjuster that came with the kit.
