I have a 1985 L-98 that needs a new engine, so I have a couple of questions if anyone can help.
1) Since I am currently an engineering student at NIU, I am not rich. I have been doing some research and have found that Jasper Engines offer a "general" replacement with only around 220hp for $1700. I found another place out in Seattle, WA called S&S Engine Remanufacturing that only rebuilds 350cid engines and offers 3/4 blocks (based on the VIN code) for about $950. They have a stock engine as well as one that is 275 hp. Has anyone heard of these guys and are they any good? Otherwise, where else can I go to get a decent 3/4 block
2) What amount of horse power will a stock intake, fuel injectors, sensors, etc. be able to handle? Since I need a new engine, this would be the time to pull the hp up a bit from the original 230hp. Would the stock fuel sytem and intake system be able to handle 275hp?
Do a search on crate engines. ask lots of questions, their are lots of places to get motors. get a budget together, and a plan, what are you going to use car for ? daily driver, weekend warrior, ect. you might be able to find someone local to pull your old one out, send it to a machine shop and rebuild, you could reuse lots of your old parts, maybe do some of the work yourself.
your intake could be ported for a little more power, get your injectors cleaned and flow tested, a good cat back system will help make some power. 65Z01 has lots of good info on his site, maybe a few more people will check in.
good luck
Its important for you to know that the advertised HP of these engines means nothing once you put your intake on it. Your intake will choke the hell out of a 275hp engine, and it wont make 275hp, might make lots of torque though.
Your sensors, intake, and FI will be just fine on any Gen I Small block Chevy.
If you want to do the engine on the cheap why don't you get a salvage engine. Check out e-day, there are always L98 engines in there. Is there a reason you don't want to get your engine rebuilt or is it FUBAR? I'd check locally to get your engine rebuilt, if you have problems you can go back. Crate engines are great but whose going to warranty against exhaust leaks, and the other problems that could pop up when you drop the crate engine in?

what does a crate engine have to do with exhaust leaks?
GM offers some good new crate motors from 250 HP fro about $1300.00 with 3 year 50K mile warranty to vortec engine 330 HP for about $2100.00 get the Scoggin Dickey voertec TPI intake to use your tpi set up or they offer rebuilt tpi engines for reasonable money Good Luck
Been there done that.....in other words due to funds at this time.....you can't do anything.......hold your breath....finish school.......work an extra job to pay for your classes.....then after everything is done....work on the vette....drive it as it is......
Good Luck

I'm sure this is way past your budget, but two years ago the LT-1 in my '95 blew up while sitting in traffic; just over 50,000 miles on the odometer. The 'vette mechanic I first took it to said it looked like a grenade had gone off in one of the cylinders; the connecting rod disintegrated and punched holes in the cylinder wall and oil pan. Changed the Mobil1 every 3k miles and never even exercised her.
Chevy refused to help with the repairs, so I had a local Chevy dealership install a new GMGoodwrench LT-1 for about $7500 installed. Comes with a 5/50 transferable warranty, and I swear this thing is noticealbly more powerful than the old motor.

:banghead:
heh for the amount you paid it better come with a hot asian woman for the remainder of the 5/50.. :jester
No hot asian women, but my stunning blonde wife would have probably objected! :boxing
I wasn't in any condition at the time to argue- got it reparied, then trucked it across the country to my new address (blew up while preparing to move). Such is life.
what does a crate engine have to do with exhaust leaks?
It doesn't.
The point I was making was that if he ordered a crate engine and installed it himself he would be responsible for any adjustments, but if he had a shop rebuild and reinstall the engine and something wasn't right then he could take it back and have them fix/adjust it.
One thing about hp rating is how did it make 275 hp, is it with headers, 750 carb intake and no emmisions?
In looking for a replacement motor ask for the cam specs and what heads are being used, so you know that your are atleast going to make 230hp. Your '624 iron head aren't all that great to start with but you would want something with 1.94/1.50 so it be atleast equal valve size to the stockers. As for cam specs your stock specs are .404/.415 lift 202/206 duration 114.5, some of the run of the mill passenger 350 have .35/.38 lift, you will notice this difference. You would want atleast something close to stock specs if not more, it doesn't really cost much if at all to have a moderate cam as oposed to a replacement cam.
