I have put about 15k miles on the car since I had my clutch replaced. I am getting a vibration type of feeling when letting out the clutch into first gear. I took it back to the shop and they said that it seems fine to them. (probably don't want to fix it) I had the car at the dealer and they said something is wrong with the clutch or flywheel and I know the car isn't supposed to drive this way. The place that did the clutch machined the flywheel with the special process that is necessary to do the dual mass flywheel. (so they say anyway) Also, it wasn't like this right after the job was done.
I'm wondering what is the cause of this condition? People have told me that it is caused by glazing on the flywheel. Can driving style cause this in only 15k miles? If so, what is it about driving style that causes this condition? Could there be some type of oil getting on the flywheel? Is this normal with machined flywheels?
Mine did the same thing. Does your stick move up when you excellerate hard. This means the tranny is loose. i know some are saying duuuhh. but it is my first time owning/driving a vette and i thought that was normal. anyway i finally decided to have the clutch replaced and the mechanic said the tranny was barely bolted on. got the new clutch anyway and with the tight tranny it is smooth as a babies butt. :D
It may chatter because it has been glazed, or the pressure plate may be damaged. Generally damage like this will be caused by excessive riding of the clutch. I have killed more than one pressure plate from the clutch spinning while engaged either fron burnouts or from Nitrous spinning the thing up.
Can you ever smell you clutch? Has an odd burning smell. If so, then you could have a glazing problem. If it is light, sometimes it will simply wear off, but it does not always.
Something else that could cause a chatter is an actual problem with the clutch disk, like a puck is loose or broken. This is not likely unless you are real hard on your clutch.
Contrary to popular belief, the dual mass flywheel can be resurfaced successfully without issues. I had one resurfaced myself and know several others running around with them on there cars with many, many thousands of miles after the resurfacing was done. Mine is long gone, but that is a different story.
