I bought a new Delphi fuel pump to replace the original pump in my early (iron head) '86. The pump electrical connections are different. The original pump has two simple spade connections (one hot, the other grounded to the return tube on the sender/pickup assembly). The new Delphi pump has what looks like a spot for a dedicated two wire plug. Is there some way to adapt this new pump or do I need another pump? Other pumps available on Rockauto appear to have the same connection as the Delphi.

Usually the new pump will come with an updated pigtail if the connections are different from stock/or stock was updated in later model years. Verify your part# and with where you got it from and if the pigtail should or shouldn't be included...You can then either source the pigtail (Usually Rock Auto will have a "note" suggesting the pigtail part # needed, if one isn't included) you need or return it and find a different pump that either doesn't need different wiring or comes with the pigtail! Off the top of my head, I think the AC Delco pump you would want (not the "advantage" line), the good one is EP 241 (but, don't quote me). I still like AC Delco (Gold/Profesional), of course Genuine GM, but I also have had good luck with and like Delphi products...they are usually pretty thorough and it makes me wonder if somebody didn't "snag" the pigtail out of your box before returning it!Hopefully this helps a little, good luck👍
Thanks! I read the fine print and it did say no pigtail was included. Filter socks aren't always included either, something that always came with pumps BITD. My local Advance has the sock but I'll have to go searching for the pigtail it seems.
I recently replaced my fuel pump with a Delphi unit and the existing wires connected without issue. I have a LT1 so don't know if your 86 has different wiring than my 95. The new Delphi didn't have a sock but old one was in great shape so just swapped in to new pump. I got my pump from AutoZone.
From what I'm seeing, later C4s had a two wire plug which mates with the Delphi pump perfectly. Early C4s (possibly '84-'87) used two separate wires with spade connectors. I'm guessing they don't make specific pumps for the early cars anymore. So Delphi sells this pump stating it fits all C4s but does not have the plug pigtail in their catalog. Frustratingly, the ultra cheap Rockauto options have the adapter wiring.
NAPA was the only source I've found so far that sells the pigtail. The local NAPA said they'd have to order it and it would be $26+tax and an addition $10 shipping to get it to the store. I've never heard of ship-to-store costing the customer money. For that price, I'll solder the damn wires to the pump, lol.
Can you take a picture of the electrical connector on the fuel pump you want to use and post it here? Back when I swapped in my last Walbro pump I ordered an assorted pack of pigtails and socks from Walbro so I knew I would have what I need. Being that I only used the one I needed It's possible I have the pigtail you need collecting dust on a shelf. If I do you can have it.
Awesome! Thanks for finding that. Every parts store I showed the pump to was clueless and I couldn't find the part no. Duly ordered and hopefully my Vette will live again.
