6400 rpm with a oil pump that moves more oil than stock, at higher rpm’s than stock..…coupled with a stock oil pan….with a flow restriction of the filter than has no opportunity to bypass if D/P is too high. Higher the flow the higher the D/P across the filter…..And the damage occurred on the last rods to get oil….
It’s a stretch but you never know

A theory as good as any other.

Plans for the future do not include 6400 rpm! Presuming it lives, I’m going to do my best to just enjoy the car without hot rodding it. I was even thinking of programming a 5.5k rev limit into the pcm.

I personally would not plug the bypass. Our cars bypass more oil than most people think. Now with that said, all the oil does get filtered over time. Dan

You could also install a bypass oil filter kit. They are out there. Dan

I put a post up in WTB. Had to be some out there. The eBay prices for C4 stuff is kinda nuts sometimes.

not sure what a bypass oil filter kit is?

I also do not plug bypasses. Dirty oil is better than no oil has always been my train of thought

The filter bypass dosen't matter one way or the other.... it'll just make the pressure bypass on the pump work harder.

The 6400 rpm didn't cause this either. Engine should be capable of turning that no problem. Now the pan getting crushed could have starved it for oil depending on how long and how hard it was run with the pickup tube smashed up against the bottom of pan sump... this is the most plausible explanation for what caused this.

Few hundred miles in that condition. It was while I was breaking it in still and well before any WOT tuning. It saw some revs (prob less than 4k) and maybe 50% throttle in that time. No way to know if the cause but in retrospect a leading contender.

I did the cleanup work this morning. Plugged the galleys with a bottle cap (pointy kind like gear oil bottle), cut flush, then nudged in so it was recessed. A little #400 which removed the bearing material deposits, then #600, then metal polish, and a lot of cleaning later - it looks good. There are no grooves or spotting, just a clean journal. I don’t think any damage was done to the journal. I had one new bearing so put it in to plastigauge, still reads 2 thousandths. Waiting on bearings to arrive then should be good to reassemble.

Just finished up the last of the work putting starter, exhaust, wiring, and fired it up.

It fired instant, no knocking, and I ran it at about 10-15 minutes.

I opted to go back to an M155 pump, I did install a Melling 70psi spring in it and the cold start was 70-ish on the analog dash gauge, the oil temp was 46* on the digital. I imagine hot thinned oil won’t be running up against the relief valve at idle. It maintained that pressure till I shut it down and oil temp was around 110.

The drained oil looked clean, I held a bright light to it as it drained and inspected in the pan. Didn’t find anything.

Test drive next.

^ A very kind post, thank you.

all went well. 30 min drive and no odd noises. I didn’t hammer on it and the most it saw was about 3500 rpm.
