Default MAF screen in or out?

I get the "service engine soon" light that turns on every now an then. The readout code for my 87 is 36 which is my MAF. I was about to purchase a new or used one from another member when I decided to take it out and clean it. I cleaned it and the light went off. Now it comes on again from time to time and will go off as I drive or will stay on and I take it out clean it and will go off again. My question is, should I remove the screens at the front and back of it? Sorry about were I posted this was half asleep and did not realize where I was.

Your MAF relays (burn-off and power) may be causing you to trip your code. They are identical and located on the firewall behind your battery, you can start there. Not only have I removed my screens but I cut out the heat sinks also in an effort to squeeze some more ponies out of my set-up.

Does it do anything? :skep:

Whatever you do, do NOT cut the heat sinks out of the MAF. They provide the cooling for the electronics in the MAF sensor. Cutting out the heat sink drastically decreases the lifespan of the sensor. Also the output signal of the sensor is calibrated based on a known cross-sectional area in the sensor. Messing with that area without re-calibrating the signal gives you bogus readings.

:iagree: Messing with the sink fins can mess up your ECM readings, especially with an aftermarket chip, if not calibrated for such a condition. Changing the relays will help. :seeya

Oh, Maybe I should have mentioned that my custom burned chip includes that variable. Otherwise, I have noticed no problems and my car flies :steering:

I pulled my screens (didn't touch the fins) and I think it was a waste of time. Absolutely no difference whatsoever. Maybe it might make a slim difference at the track but for driving around town it didn't do a thing.

LIke I said before on my post, I posted this twice like an idiot because I was half asleep but everyone has told me pretty much the same thing about the relays. I will take them out today and replace them. Hopefully that is the problem. Thanks All

I don't think so. The output of the sensor is based on the amount of current required to heat the sensor wire to a known value. Thats how a MAF system can correct for elevation, temperature and humitity effects on the intake air. Removing the screens and heat sinks will cause the engine to lean out a little because of the additional air flow not accounted for by the sensor wire.
