Default L98 88’ coolant temperature sensor replacement

I’m looking to replace the coolant temperature sensor that is located on the passenger side cilinders.

In my 88’, without the factory dual fan option this one is actually for the coolant temp display in the gauge cluster.

The Haynes manual states that it is the fan switch which is false… that’s what I thought and after putting in a 185/195 switch my dashboard read LOW until 185 and then jumped to 299F lol

It’s confusing because there are a lot of forum posts stating that the switch is on the passenger side and then the actual sensor for the gauge cluster reading on the driver side cilinders. But mine only has one, the temp sensor for the gauge cluster. The other side I can see the spot where it should be located but it’s filled in.

Anyway, instead of putting back the old one, while I’m at i’ll just replace it. Would a Duralast TU66 from the local auto store work for this?

I can't help you with your sensor. But my advise is to toss than Haynes manual in the recycle bin and buy a factory service manual for your 88. If you shop around you can usually find both volumes for under $100.00

Just to update in case anyone else finds this thread:

The Autozone sensor did not work. It just read LOW throughout.

Picked up this one from Summit: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/SMP-TS76

Everything is working great now

Thanks for posting the solution. I clicked on the link, and looked at applications. 80 pages of 25 per page! I wonder if there is any engine it doesn't fit.
