I'm looking for some help diagnosing a problem with my headlight motor. When you pull the switch one side is activated totally normal, but the drivers side locks up it will move if pressure is applied, I replaced the main drive gear and the problem persisted. The headlight is also stuck in the half open position with the manual adjuster not able to lock it in place.(The drive gears were stripped on removal). (1985)

Apply power directly to the motor and see if it works. This will tell you if the problem is mechanical or electrical.

Sounds like a limit switch that is internal in the motor assembly. Often the contacts need to be cleaned. Unplug and test with 12v power to motor, if it still does it then the limit switches could be the issue. Otherwise maybe a relay?

I had one of the headlights pop up half way. Then I would have to turn them off-on-off again a few times to get it to close back up. Figured it might be the little plastic pieces in the motor housing. Found that the 3 plastic dowels were still good but the main plastic gear had a crack in it. It still looked fine but I believe because of the crack it causes it to expand a little (I mean a LITTLE) but it was enough that instead of the worm gear running between the teeth it would bind on the tooth after the crack and that would be enough to trip the limit switch. I got the rebuild kit from Amazon that had 2 new brass gears along with the plastic dowels. I just replaced the main gear and now it all works. Not sure if that helps but it sounds similar to what you are describing.
