Nope, you can yank them.

There is the chance that the O2 sensor will simply stay cooler longer, so it won't go into Closed loop quite as fast as normal, but if the main cat is still there, I would not worry about that issue. You will probably still end up with better MPG.

You won't get a trouble code except for the Code 32 if you pull EGR. You will want to put in a heated O2 sensor instead of the stocker at some point to prevent the problem of dropping into open loop at idle.

I would have done that to mine (cats welded to pipe) but the front pipe going into the cat and rear coming out are both at an angle that will not easily allow me to hollow them out. It was going to be just as easy and cheaper to cut them out when I can find someone to do the welding. I tried a couple of muffler shops that said "man, it's just as easy to rebuild the whole thing from scratch". I guess I have to remove them again and find a welder or learn how to. Learning to weld and starting on thin exhaust may not be a good idea.

I wouldn't just gut them. I did that on mine years ago and it sounded awful. Replace it with a straight pipe. If you have visual emissions inspections then I would weld a pipe inside the body of the cat after you gut it.

I wish so bad they would eliminate them here in PA. We don't have them for antique vehicles so my 84 doesn't have to have inspections. But everything else I own does.

I was thinking about rempving the front cats and putting the shorty glass packs in place of them. I have a spot on my headers where I can put the O2 censor. was going to leave the small pope for the EGR and cut a hole in the exhaust pipe and weld it in. I want to run true duals. I have made some new rocker panl covers similar to the old Greenwood that they used to sell. I cut a 8 in by 2 in slot in the where I could run sort of nascar boom tubes but there just not much room underneath to run the exhaust out the side. O could do it with some metal fab work. I do body work and have plenty experience with metal fab. Just not sure if I want to at the moment. I did my friends 86 side pipes but there is not much room behind the front wheel for them. O fabbed a square transition piece from behind the cats to the rocker panels bur not much ground clearance, but he wanted it that way. But they do sound awesome.
