Has any one used the Cloyes timing set in a LT1 I am thinking of using there set up in my rebuild it is close in price and I have always found there quality to be great in every other aplication I have used them in.
If you want to use the Cloyes timing chain on an LT1 you'll have to switch the H2O pump to an electric and use a GenI timing chain cover. The exteme duty LT4 timing chain is made by Cloyes, cost twice as much, but it does allow you to use the stock LT1 H2O pump.
Here's a direct quote from gmpartsdirect.com (performance) regarding the extreme duty timing set...
"This extreme duty timing chain kit is for 1995 and newer model "Gen II" LT1 and LT4 engines. To convert 1993 and 1994 engines, you must use camshaft P/N 10224242, distributor P/N 1104032, timing cover P/N 12552426, vac harness P/N 12554395, and vac fitting P/N 14082470. Included in this kit are the following steel gears: water pump gear, a camshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket P/N 14088784, and timing chain P/N 14088783. These parts are not the production replacement components, but this roller chain kit is a great performance upgrade. Use with pin drive camshaft only."
Looks like if you want to go to a Cloyes, you'll need an electric water pump and an aftermarket timing cover at least. I'm interested in this thread as well - I'm gathering all the parts for my top end package... :)
I have a Cloyes double roller on my LT1 (1995) and I do not need an aftermarket timing cover. Why is this necessary? There are a few other forum members with Cloyes double rollers on their LT1's that do not need a different timing cover.
An electric water pump is a must though (or belt driven). I have my Meziere on the way
Cloyes has two different timing sets for motors. The one is a direct replacement and requires no electric water pump as it has the gear to drive the water pump machined to the cam gear. Its is expensive (c. $360)
The other is a generic late model SBC set and does not have the water pump drive gear machined with the cam sprocket. This requires the additino of an aftermarket water pump and is less than $100.
The latter does not require a new front cover. I don't know about the former.
