I am wondering how quick should my car start in the morning or after it sat for a while. Right now I have to crank the engine about 3-5 second before it start to catch.
What do I need to check to solve this problem?
I just rebuild the engine, it has about 2400 miles on now. New fuel pump, cold start injector was clean by cruzeperformance about 2000 miles ago. Fuel injector have about 15,xxx miles. Throttle body, plenum are clean since I just put it back together. Every sensors are new if that make a difference.

Mine starts in 0.5 to 1 seconds ie. immediately. Even when it is -20F.
Check your ignition timing, coil, wires, plugs and fuel pressure to start with. It could be weak spark or maybe slow or weak fuel pump or even badly leaking injectors (damaged O-ring while installing them?).

Timing is good, new wires, new plugs, and coil was check before the rebuild. O-ring should be good because its new and I don't have hot/warm start problem, meaning my 8 injectors work good. New fuel pump also.
What about coil? How do you know when to change the coil even if the resistance check was ok?

It takes two attemps for my L98 to start. However, I don't turn it over for 3-5 seconds. I turn the key and let it come back immediatly.
I did that a lot few years back when the fuel injectors were leaking and had problem with hot start. Recently changed the starter after the rebuild . I don't want to go through that again in the near future. The transmission cooler lines were in the way.
Re: How quick should my 88 start when cold? (VQT88Vette)
I had the same problem with my LT1, I changed the fuel pump and there was no difference. So I thought, what the hell, I'll change the fuel pressure regulator also, it was easy and cheap and it worked.
Re: How quick should my 88 start when cold? (VQT88Vette)
My '88 starts instantly!! It fires as soon as the starter moves. I always turn on the ignition switch, wait a couple of seconds for all the digital readings to settle down, then one crank of the starter and it's purring. :yesnod:
Good luck, :auto:
Re: How quick should my 88 start when cold? (VQT88Vette)
Sorry I can't help with your question but I have been wondering about this too. My 1988 was starting up almost instantly before. I would turn the key to on until the fuel pump stopped then I would start the car. Now I too have to crank it for around three seconds for it to catch and give it a little gas to get the RPMs up. Then it idles normal while it's warming up. I haven't noticed any drop in performance while driving it.

Starting procedure for my 88:
Key in, turn on wait a sec.
Turn key to start, 97% of the time it starts on the first revolution
the other 3% is when its very cold < 15* F then its 2 or 3 revs.
I did replace the coil when I did a tune up in July, that could be the problem. THey ain't too cheap, but it made a significant diference for me.

What about your fuel filter, did you check that? Did you replace the starter during the rebuild? Are your voltage readings good?
When its cold, my 86 fires right up.
New rebuild starter right after rebuild engine. The starter die on me :mad . Fuel filter is fairly new too. The car only took longer to start when the engien is cold where I thought cold start injector wold solve the problem...
