I am removing engine from an 85 for a overhaul, do I have to also remove the motor mount to block bolts to get the engine free ? there is so little room between the trans and the firewall .Can the engine be lifted high enough to release it from the trans alignment pins with out firewall interference ? Thank you for your help !
Just did this and you have to remove the balancer pulley and water pump pulley to make it easier. You can do it from the side without removeing the hood. The hardest thing to do is get those top tranny bolts out, but you can do it with about three foot of extension, shallow socket, and universal. When I put it back in, I replaced the top bolts with studs and nuts then you can get to them from the top with an open end. I will do this with all small blocks from now on. I have never had an install go as easy as I did with the studs in the block.
I pulled my engine out with the water pump, bellhousing, oil filter, balancer all still attached. I did take the crank pulley off and had removed the trans already.
I pulled my motor and trany (700r4) together and it took 9 hours of cursing to have a friend tell me the next day that all you need to do is remove the 3 bolts that hold the motor mount to the block on each sie and it comes right out :banghead:
I tried to pull mine without removing the three bolts - It didn't work. Wait till you try to put the one back in on the pass side :mad
If you pull it with the tranny, you'll have to remove the hood. I pulled motor only and had no problem with hood on. I also removed manifold in car which made it easy to get to the top motor/trans bolts from top. I installed it the same way. ;)
