Default Mystery hole

Does anyone know what this hole is for? 1985 Corvette 4+3 transmission. It's about 1/2 inch diameter with a notch on one side. It's right behind the overdrive transmission pan. It looks like a plug of some type goes here. I recently had the fluid and filter changed and I think the mechanic may have removed a plug of some type and never put it back on. Very small amount of fluid drips come from there now.

It looks like mine had that too. I never noticed nor looked at it.

my OD works, the hole must not be important.

My guess is that it is a fixture hole for locating and machining the case when it was manufactured. Note that there are two more holes in the front corners of the case, inside the perimeter of the pan.

Why it is dripping oil, I have no idea.

The small drip may actually be coming from somewhere else and just dripping down over the edge. I can't tell. I guess there are no rubber plugs or anything to go into that hole?

I don't think there is a plug. My 85 is in storage 150 miles from here, but I happen to be going up there tomorrow. I just wrote "mirror" on my pre-trip check list. I'll check it out for you.

Ok. I just looked at my 85. No plug, just a raw hole. Kind of hard to see because the exhaust is right below it, probably why I've never noticed it. I can see structure higher up through the hole, but the hole seems to be under a 'void' in the case.

I learned something. I never knew that was there.
