Default Rear Window Defroster question

I am replacing the top on my 1989 convertible. Have decided on the using the glass rear window with a defroster. I ordered the new top, adapter kit and new weatherstrips.
I was told that there were connections behind the seat belt covers for the rear window defroster. One wire on each side of the defroster and that I would use the switch for the outside mirror defroster for my rear window. So I guess my question is are the connectors behind the seat belt covers already connected to the outside mirror switch or do I need to do some rewiring?

The hot lead defogger connector should be in a wire loom that will be between the shoulder belt mounting tower and the top frame hinge most likely on the passenger side. On my 92, it's an orange/white wire about 6" long sticking out of the loom on the passenger side. You will have to pull back the carpet a bit to find it.

The ground wire would be attached to the belt tower on the other side but only if the car came with the factory hardtop option. The OEM ground wire assembly is no longer available from GM and I have never found the correct connector on the AC Delco site or in any of the catalogs. That's no real biggie as you can just make up a length of wire in the correct gauge and terminate one end with a spade or ring connector and use a self-tapping screw to attach it to a good ground and use an appropriate male/female connector for the other end. You would have to cut off whatever connector came with the top and attach the new connector.

The mirror heat button will power the defogger in the top glass. The circuit wire and the fuse are large enough to handle the load and the relay will power off after 10 minutes anyway.

They were hot on mine. But remember, mine had a hardtop option available from GM. This is why they were there. I don't know if this was an option on your car. They may or may not be there regardless.

Thanks for the info. Parts should be here in a few days so that should give me time to look around.

This is always the best place to go for info.

:yesnod:

Thanks

'89 was the first year for the CC2, so the the wires will be there.
