Default LT1 Catastrophic Engine Failure - Cause?

Bit of backstory - car is a '95 LT1 6-speed that me and my dad got recently as a second track car to drive alongside our NB miata. Engine had ~75k miles and had a "rebuilt stock bottom end" (not sure why or what is included in this as all the work was done two owners ago), ported heads, 52mm throttle body, and an egregiously aggressive cam (233/239 LE so we were told). Car drove well enough, though it didn't seem to really get into the cam until the top of the top end (>5k rpm). Drove on track for two days (five fifteen minute sessions each) about a month apart and on the very last run I set my PB for this car so it had to have been running okay at the time. I did wring it out but never past redline. Ran fine on the cooldown lap and then when I came in to pit it died once I came to a stop. Started it back up and was greeted with an atrocious noise and immediately turned back off and trailered home.

Started to tear apart to see what was what and this was my first clue something was awry. Valve spring is nearly completely out of the top hat on cylinder #1.

Pulled the plugs and knew something was very wrong. Check out cylinder #5's plug (labeled as Drivers 3). Yikes. Also two completely different plugs in this set. No idea as to why on that.

And here it is. Big ol hole in piston #5 and you can see some of the shrapnel in cylinders #3 and #7.

Some of that metal made it through the intake over to cylinders #6 and #8 as well. Lovely.

Here is the drivers side head. Intake valve snapped clean in half and twisted in the seat.

So my question is what caused what? Current hypothesis (though this is just a guess tbh) is that I had valve float causing the spring clip to pop off and the valve to drop and contact the piston. If you have another explanation I am very curious. Also, cylinder #1 looked totally fine yet its valve spring is nearly completely off the top hat - would the same thing have caused that as well?

Some items of note (ie red flags) that in hindsight should have warranted further investigation:
1) Car had what sounded like a slight knock at idle. The noise would completely go away with any kind of revs though so I attributed it to the choppiness of the cam.
2) Intermittent low oil pressure at idle - down around 10 per the gauge in the dash. I had read that some LT1s run fairly low pressure and it came up into the 40s or so with any kind of revs so it went to the backburner.
3) It overheated a few days prior to the track day. Thermostat stuck closed and blew off the rad hose. Drove for maybe a mile or two before noticing the temp gauge. Thermostat was replaced and car ran fine thereafter (ya know, until it exploded).

TL;DR: Corvette driver is dumb and likes to wring out unknown car/engine on track, hilarity ensues.

OUCH!!! With an out right hole punched in that piston and not just a top ring land broken off I would say you have it right as to what happened.

Ouch..been there before. Was the spring install height checked when built? Coil bind maybe and the spring let go?

More than likely it got hot enough to drop the intake seat.... valve hung open, smacked by the piston a few times and eventually, boom.

OK that explains that Cylinder but what about the one next to it ? Had to come from the Intake and had to be multiple parts for multiple cylinders.

Collateral damage is the easiest one to explain. The #5 intake valve is broke in half and wedged in the seat sideways. So everytime that piston came up it forced debris back into the intake around the broken valve.

Also, that valve spring on no.1 appears to be broken. Hard to tell but they look like beehive springs.

First I am sorry for your loss. Second congratulation on your new boat anchor. I had a 396 that (during an awesome 1/4 mile run) broke the crank, split the block, harmonic balancer rotated smashing water pump sending fan into radiator. And jus to top it off I had dings in the bottom of hood from stuff that flew through the valve covers and hit that hard. Many of us have been there with you at some point. Rebuild and hit the track again. This will become one of those good stories.
