Default LT4 Main Bearings

I’m in the process of replacing my main bearings. Rods already done, so moving to mains. I have pulled #2 and #3 mains out so far and both the upper and lower shell of those locations are marked “.0006” which tells me they’re smaller by .0012 in totality. I put a set of STD bearings in to check clearance and they measured .0015”-.0017”. Chad Golen recommended .0025” - .0028” clearance on the mains.

I looked up the Clevite size options and all of them are “undersized”. I believe these will reduce the clearance when I actually need to OPEN the clearance. Can anyone provide input on who the heck makes SBC bearings that increase clearance by ~0.001” ? This will put be in the clearance range that Chad is recommending.

Thanks!

Something is not adding up. I thought undersized bearings were needed when the crank has been refinished to a smaller size to clean it up. It looks like you already have undersized bearings. If you put a new standard sized bearing in you should have way too much clearance. where is this thinking wrong? Dan
