Ok, this is for anyone who has modified their engine big time. Whether it be straight motor, SC, TC, or nitrous. How well do the various gears handle to the power? How about a Dana 36 vs a Dana 44 using straight street tires?
In case you haven't noticed, I'm very curious about the tranny and gears because its going to be a major investment for me pretty soon (summer time).
This has been discussed a couple times recently (maybe in the drag
racing section) and the consensus is that if you're running an automatic,
the D36 is fine even with a lot of horsepower and running a lot at the
drag strip, especially if you're just running street tires. The automatic
is not nearly as hard on the differential as a manual transmission can
be. The manual can be hard on the drive train depending on how the
driver uses the clutch.
Unless you are going with a big stall and slicks, I doubt you would have problems with the dana36. I did the switch on my 92, but I doubt that I could have ever broke the 36 without slicks. This car makes just over 400fwhp and the only thing I really worry about it the car shifting into O.D. at full throttle. It seems that the 700r4's can't take that kind of power without some modification. I don't even have a shift kit yet!
I don't have a highly modified car, but I do have about 100 1/4 passes on my dana 36 (2.59s). Probably more than half of them are on drag radials and I've had 60' times as low as 1.77 without any rear problems. I had planned on moving up to a dana 44 (3.07), but Vic'89 gave me such a great deal on his dana 36 (3.07) that I couldn't pass it up. Since it held up ok on 12.80 passes for him, I doubt I'll have a problem.
