What do you guys recommend for removing gasket residue from the engine block, intake, heads, etc. I don't have any air tools, and I'm thinking there must be a better way than using a razor blade. Any suggestions???
Well... sorry to say, when I did my water pump, I used a razor blade, too. Seemed to get the job done - tedious, but it did work. Actually did have to use a flat screwdriver in a couple of places where it was hard to manuever the razor blade.
I just use a razor blade, usually works great (you can nick aluminum if you're not careful though). Wipe with brake cleaner (or cleaner of choice) when done.
For really tough cases, you can also buy some gasket remover, it comes in aerosol cans. Spray on, let it soak in, scrape off. Make sure you read the instructions fully though to be sure you don't get it on anything it's not intended for.

Re: removing gasket residue (Vince Ivanc)
Use gasket remover... 6 bucks or so at your local autoparts store, in the blue aerosol can... let it soak as long as you can bear to wait, then go at it with a razor blade. It should soften it up, and you can get some of the small crap with your fingernails. The gasket remover will burn your skin eventually, so make sure you keep some wd-40 or something around to keep your hands clean.
When I fixed my intake manifold leak, ~60% of the time was spent removing petrified old gaskets. :mad
Years ago when I worked in a shop we had a gasket tool. Hade a screwdriver handle long shaft and flat blade at the end that you could eventually sharpen on a grinder if needed. If I'm not mistaken you can get them in any auto parts store. Now that you got me thinking ,I think I'll buy one myself.
