I have found that with my bone stock 96 I also need 5 1/2 qt to be full to the top. I do allow mine to drain and drip for a long time so maybe that is a factor for a couple of ounces. Dan

Difficult to figure out what you're trying to say here BUT 1.5 qts I'd say is serious 'overfill' and asking for serious issues.

If the oil pan is OE you do a fill using factory fill suggestions and note the dip stick.

– Oil Type: The LT1 engine requires a high-quality, multi-viscosity engine oil with a viscosity rating of 5W-30. This ensures optimal lubrication in various operating conditions. – Oil Capacity: The engine oil capacity for the LT1 engine is approximately 5.5 quarts (including the oil filter).

This is a cut and paste from google. I know not the best source. Dan

From an appropriate FSM for LT1 VIN 'P' OB-8 or thereabouts any year. 4.0 Q less filter & 4.5 Q w/filter with a note *recheck levels after refill.

I know some people claim that halfway up the crosshatch area is "FULL". I take mine to the top of the crosshatch area. I sure hope that is OK. I have been doing it for years. Dan

I was curious about this too. Owners manual says 4.5 qt capacity with filter change, and that brings it to the halfway point between hash marks. But I always just put 5 qts in because that’s what I’ve done for every small block Chevy.
