Default Difference between Hypertech Programmer "Plus" and "III"?

Just wondering what the difference is between the old Hypertech Power Programmer Plus and the newer Power Programmer 3. What advantage does the "3" have over the older version?

It would be for an LT1 car if it makes any difference.

I seem to remember hearing that the "plus" had some sort of a problem with their "power tuning" that made some cars actually perform worse. I have read this on the internet a few times, but this was about a year ago when I was reading about the programmer before I bought mine. I would advise you to just get a tuning package like TunerCat with the ALDL->RS232 adapter which can be had for a little cheaper than the Hypertech programmer. I would have gone that route, but I was pressed for time to get my car going again with new gears installed, so I got the Hypertech.

One is junk, the other is really JUNK!

Sorry, couldn't resist. I bought a used one, and wish I hadn't. For the money you spend, you could save up a little more and buy LT1 Edit, and have access to so many more parameters.

You've peaked my interest. I've got an HPP+. Would this be a firmware bug that Hypertech could fix by upgrading the firmware in my HPP+ if I sent it in?

Guess I need to ask Hypertech that question

Got any links to where saw that info by chance (?)

If you are running stock (which means all the falsies like TB Bypass, IAT/MAT relocation, Air Foil, etc.) then the plug-in stuff does you no good.

The advertised power variance (by law) must be within 10%. That means that any LT1 could make between 270 and 330 net flywheel horsepower. The factory programming is quite aggressive for the Y bodies and will (if your engine is in proper tune) give you the most performance your engine will allow.

The only real HP/Performance gains are from "hard" changes such as cam, heads, gears, and intake. Only then will you have to tell the PCM that some big changes have been made. If you stay with the factory hard parts, then the factory PCM/ECU will do it's best to give you maximum performance. Skip the hype and believe the initial quote. There are no "cheap" performance gains.

The plug in stuff i.e. Hypertech, is very handy to have for programming the radiator fans to activate sooner than 220F and also for increasing the line pressure in the auto trans from the up to a more performance related level. If you change your rear ratio the Hypertech can also program the ECM to the new ratio so your speedometer and odometer are accurate w/ the new ratio.
You can alter the shift points for the auto trans as well with the Hypertech.

So it is useful for other than engine programming.

I agree about the Hypertech Power Tuning option. My 95 auto runs better on factory tuning. But then I have an HPP+ and not a III so maybe thats it...
