I need to replace the starter motor assembly on my '94 LT1. I'm wondering how tough of a job this is. Is the unit accessible from the bottom or is there a lot of work required to get to it? I haven't even taken a look underneath yet.
Well, I can tell you it isn't very hard to do on an L98. I don't know if there is anything different about the LT1 under there. You will get all kinds of advice on which starter to use I would think. For me the Autolite rebuilt with a lifetime warranty is the best choice. As far as I'm concerned any starter is going to fail in my setup because of the long tube header and road race oil pan I have. The Autolite seems to last about a year for me and then I just take it in and they give me another. Many people will tell you they are junk but there is something to be said for that warranty.
This is the first repair I did on my 93 lt1. I think it took longer to get the car up in the air, than it did to replace the starter. Two bolts (one long, one short) and 2 connections. You will need an extension. Mine didn't have any shims (I've heard of some that do). Be sure to clean the starter mounting surface (need a good ground)
I just got a quote of $293 for the GM part from the dealer. Should I explore other avenues? I know that I've seen Jeff Kopp's (?) name bandied about as a source for GM parts. Anybody know contact info?
Don't replace! Get it rebuilt instead! I paid $91 locally for an alternator/starter shop to rebuild it. Looked brand new and has been working great.....that was well over 2 years ago.
My L98 is an automatic and it is very difficult to replace the starter. The transmission line and the line that connect to the exhaust are in the way. It took me ~3 hours to figure out how to take the starter out and put the new one in. :mad
