Hi All,
My 93 LT1 has been eating coils at an alarming rate. I've had the car a really long time. And very familiar with state of complete ignition system. I initially bought one of those red msd coils and a new icm. That was around 7000 miles ago. Started getting optispark problems afterwards and found the 4 pin connector was completely corroded. Installed a new opti and WP. Not long after the msd coil died. Got a new AC Delco from Amazon that fixed the problem - for about 4 months. This week it started intermittently dieing while driving. The spark looks very weak when it is hot. I am certain the coil is bad again. Is there something that could be wrong that is causing premature failure of coils? Or am I just getting crappy parts? Anyone else seeing such rapid coil failure
I sure don't know what is your problem. What I will say is when you have electrical circuits some laws apply. Ohm's law : Volts = current times resistance or V=I x R. What can change is the resistance. When I pulled my opti years ago to have the optidoc rebuild it the coil connection was completely full of whitish corrosion. There are multiple places where corrosion can build up with the coil. I would check them all if you replace it again. When you add resistance you add heat. Just like an electric resistance heater. Unless you have been extremely unlucky with your coil purchases something else is sending the wrong voltage or current to your coil. Dan
