88 horn replacement question
1988 Vette base model, 350, blah blah blah...
I need to replace the horn in my "88". located on the passenger side of car....To be honest with you, I am sitting inside avoiding the rain to run outside and look...
I do not recall if the 88 has 1 or 2 horns..
I read somewhere that there is a "tone" or "note" for these?.....
I looked at a few on "flea-bay" and want to be sure that I get the correct one and one that simply bolts up..
Any assistance would be appreciated...

I would maybe scour the threads for matched pairs of 'matching' after-market and replacing the pair.
Will look for them/them tomorrow....I did bench-check the horn by applying 12vdc to
it directly and it sounds faint if it sounds as all...I don't recall in I ck'ed the other horn (drivers' side)....

Thanks for the reply...
Not a bad idea to look here first...All I have to do is remember how to search in a particular
forum as it has been some time....
QUESTION - can the horns be opened"? (more curious than anything)...

NOT A RESTORATION...HAS BEEN SITTING A BIT DUE TO THE EXTREME HEAT 2 YEARS OR SO AGO
THAT MELTED THE "REPAIR FILM" COVERING THAT I PURCHASED FROM (NOW ON MY "S" LIST)....
THE ENTIRE DASH FILM (SPEEDO-TACH-ETC) ALL IS MELTED...Difficult to drive when you have an
unreadable dash.....,**Sorry 'bout caps!...If anyone wants to see picts, I'll post 'em...
Tomorrow, I'll re-check both horns....Do theses horns cross-reference to any other vehicle?

Forgot to ask - The "A" and the "C" relates to what, the tone or note?
The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
Pulled both horns a while ago.....Applied 12vdc to BOTH horns individually and"
1)...Passenger side FAILED...I heard something but, just isn't cutting it....
Since it is shot, I may just apply some PB Blaster down the horn to see what happens...
2)...Drivers side passed...
BIG "A" IMPRINT WRITTEN ON ONE HORN.
# 070057 ON HORN
OTHER NUMBERS ARE:
A LARGE "E"
"A-450" IS TONE I READ SOMEPLACE........
28042
8203
NOW THAT I HAVE SOME QUIET AROUND HERE, I PRESSED THE HORN BUTTON AND DID NOT HEAR A CLICK OF THE RELAY...
IF I REMEMBER, THE HORN RELAY IS BEHIND THE CENTER TELL-TAIL AND SO IS THE FUSE...(AM I CORRECT)?
(Sorry 'bouit the dark picts) -
Passenger side I believe:
Drivers' side I believe:
If the relay and fuse are behind the dash, I am done for the day as it is clouding up quickly...
QUESTION:
Notice the female horn plug...Is there a female to this plug that could be purchased?

The connector to the horn is GM# 12116958 ACD PT419 or an equivalent from anyone. GM replacement for that connector through the years would be 15306302 PT1357 or 19368034 PT3910. Newer numbers are generally more expensive.
Most any 'local' auto parts store should have or if you're a Bezos buyer they should have also.

HAHAH...I had so much sweat in my eyes and borderline "over-heating" that I got 'em reversed...EMBARRASSED!
....Good save! There is a small "****" located near the center of the horn....Function to adjust tone?
Had to "pack-up" because the sky opened up for a bit...Then, after the rain, I went back out ready to attack the dash, and the same darn thing happened...

Before I start this process, I will have to check if inner coil is intact....Will advise soonest......
Decided to take apart defective horn.....
Fact is, as mentioned before, this does not work when bench tested, have no power "click" to relay, and other horn not working...
Was going to take apart dash and check fuse but, threatening skies told me not to...So, the horn is what I started with...
I can post picts of the procedure if anyone wants.....This was not as easy as I thought....
The internal coil (an electromagnet of sorts), checks "good" so, there is an internal mechanical failure...I still have 2 rivets to pull out and a plastic plate to remove....
...And it rained 10 minutes after I started disassembling horn!

Still could not access my dash area due to rain starting at 4:45am eastern time (U.S) and, rain starting and stopping every 40 minutes...
Finished with removing the remaining PITA rivets and cleaning up all applicable inner and outer surfaces...
Reassembled and horn works...
Because I fooled around with the very small bolt/screw protruding from back of the horn, it left the tone a slightly "raspy"....
So, will tinker with it another day...
Even still, thinking about using a similar looking" "train horn" for those a$$-h-le drivers....On the list in the next 2 weeks is to replace tires (delivered yesterday)....and some interior work...

You gave me the part number for the FEMALE" and is correct...Would you happen to have a part number that this would insert into?

Yeah, it's looking that way....
I could 'splice in" (without actually cutting stock wire) a wire (maybe with spade terminals for another type horn should need be...
The splice could be hidden and tucked away.....
Was looking at another "just in case" 300DB horn but, have to determine current draw...
Say, when the horn button is pushed, both horns go off but, does the alarm function the same way as both going off?.
