Installed a rebuilt rack today on an 85. It's only 1 3/4 turns lock to lock. I thought it should be about 2 2/3 on standard suspesion. Also with all the adjustment used the wheels are still turned out. I wonder what this thing is supposed to fit? It fits the factory mounts perfect!
I got one from exotic muscle that was kissed up too. The stupid thing was off a tooth or something. It turned to the left better then the right. After I figured what was wrong with it I rippe dit back out.
As far as how fun is this job. I have done it twice now, and I still dont like it.
If you have adjusted the tie rods completely up the I'd say you have gotten the wrong rack.
They changed the width of them back around 86-87 I think.
Have your parts guy do a double take on the part numbers he fixed you up with.
BTW there ARE TWO racks. The standard one and the "Z51" rack.
Z51 is the much quicker steering one of the two.
From the lock to lock turns you gave, it sounds like you got a Z51 rack.
Get the CORRECT one and you'll like it. If you had the standard rack and change over to the Z51 rack, you'll LOVE it.
