I just picked up a project 84' with 60K miles it needs cleaned up and painted been sitting 10 years. My only grip is it's a manual has anyone here successfully swapped the Nash out for a 700r4 and everything working like it was factory? I know most will say buy an auto car but this is the one I'm playing with for now and I have the equipment to do the swap if it comes to that.

Being that most people want to swap an auto for a standard I think the easiest way to do this is to trade cars. You could probably find an 84 auto that is in nicer condition than yours that the owner would trade you for your car. I'm not saying to not swap it. But if the car isn't sentimental to you then I would consider a trade.
Now with all that said if you do decide to swap the trans don't do a 700r4. I don't think GM made a transmission that was much worse to be honest. You can pick up a nice low mileage 4L60e for a very good price. You would just need a small ecu to run it. The Microsquirt ecu is a solid option. You can even pull a 411 PCM from a 4.3L Blazer or S10 and with a $75 harness have it run just a 4L60e without much issue. But that option requires you to use HPTuners or PCM Hammer to make work.
I’m still planning on doing this swap soon. None of the mechanical parts are an issue just the electrical portion. Does anyone know about what wiring harness feeds the auto trans and is the wiring that feeds the shifter a separate harness? I want to have the everything function properly I.E. shifter lockout, neutral safety, and lighting.
(EDIT: my original reply was too critical. Im interested to see where this goes. Manual to auto is not a common swap!)
I read your original post. I didn't think it was too critical. But I agree. There are so many people looking for a good C4 with a manual trans. To convert one to auto just seems odd. You could probably trade the car for a nicer auto and still probably get some cash out of the deal.
But at the end of the day it's not my car. The OP can of course do what they want. It just seems like a lot of work when you could just trade cars with someone.

Pretty much my exact thoughts before I wiped my post. If it was my grandfathers car or something, yeah I’d want to keep the car and swap the transmissions all the way. But if it’s just a nice manual 84? You could sell it and get a damn solid auto.
The main reason I edited my original post is because, like you said, it ain’t my car. If the OP goes through, it’ll surely be valuable information to someone else in the future.
Well if this 84 was a prize i would definitely not consider doing the swap and trade or sell it to find an auto. Fact is i bought the car sight unseen and it basically needs restored paint, interior ,fuel system,Ect. At that point why not play with it no one will want to tirade anything for something that looks that bad. Sure i could clean it up then trade it but i will have too much money in it to get out. Hope that puts things in perspective. Now if you know anyone that wants to trade a auto car for my project send them my way i would be happy to save then time!

Take good pictures of it and put it in the for sale section in the forum. Also list it for trade on Facebook. You might be surprised how fast it goes. Think of how expensive it would be to convert an auto to a manual. I'm willing to bet it would cost a lot less to make the car you have look nice. So someone wanting a standard would be pretty motivated to trade with you. I would at least give it a shot before you invest the time and money into a conversion.
First thing is to get it running and see if it has any mechanical issues if that all works out i may list it to see what happens. The reality is these cars are not worth much even in good condition.
