is there a kit I could use to rebuild it without buying a ton of parts separately?
If you are asking this question you are not qualified to rebuild this transmission. Either take it to a local shop or shop online. Dan edit: I am not qualified either.

I build 4L60E GMs for a tranny shop...
sounds like the FORWARD clutches or 3rd/4th clutches (or both) could be smoked and stuck together, forcing them to be "on" all the time.
If you drop the pan, and you see a black sticky icky mess... it is probably those clutches.
If you just have metal in the fluid and on the magnet, there is a chance it is a sprag/roller clutch issue.

Where are you located?
That is what I had thought too but the OP has given such limited information to describe the conditions more adequately that I did not pursue it any longer. The only thing in this scenario that I question is he said he also gets "drive" when he selects reverse. If the forward/3-4 clutches are welded, he should get a total bind when the reverse input clutch comes on. I am thinking he has destroyed a hard part somewhere in the train. A destroyed rear planet would cause this.
At first it started grinding a little but once it got up to speed it acted completely fine then parked it for an hour then reverse started acting like it was parked and wouldn’t go into neural.so I just figured I’d learn to rebuild the trans myself because I can’t afford a big bill for it.

Everyone has to learn somehow. Start by watching teardown videos on Youtube. There must be hundreds of teardown/rebuild videos of the 4L60(E). Get yourself an ATSG manual that outlines all the specs for a rebuild.

I have been watching the videos on the tear downs to me it seems pretty straightforward to me and I’ll get the manual for it
