Well it's not a true backfire really. Any exhaust leaks will make the condition even worse. It will make more noise for sure if you remove the cat but it's harmless. If you don't like the noise than you really should leave the cat in place.

When I had my Vette's PCM reprogrammed this was fixed, I guess the stock PCM programming runs rich when you let off the gas to prevent detenation, the effect is the "backfire" sound.
i dont think its really backfiring per se, just a lack of backpressure making a poppin sound when you let off the accelerator. I had my mufflers off for the last 2 weeks and it was doing this like crazy. Now that they are back on it has stopped.

completely correct, it's more of a popping sound but it's very normal. even the C5-R does this if you've had a chance to watch it race in person.
