Default Does no CATs = backfiring

I was thing about removing the CATs and putting mufflers on(which would

mean I would have straits with only mufflers), anyway my question is would

this cause back firing, My friend had a 95' Camaro and had no cats with only

one flowmater muffler and his car backfires when he lets off the gas.

Well it's not a true backfire really. Any exhaust leaks will make the condition even worse. It will make more noise for sure if you remove the cat but it's harmless. If you don't like the noise than you really should leave the cat in place.

...no cats...his car backfires when he lets off the gas.
When I had my Vette's PCM reprogrammed this was fixed, I guess the stock PCM programming runs rich when you let off the gas to prevent detenation, the effect is the "backfire" sound.

My findings are the less restrictive the exhaust, the less it backfires.

1st exhaust mod.....muffler eliminators
2nd exhaust mod.....catless front y-pipe & hi-flo cat
3rd exhaust mod.....long tube headers

I noticed less backfiring (if you will) after ea. of these mods.

i dont think its really backfiring per se, just a lack of backpressure making a poppin sound when you let off the accelerator. I had my mufflers off for the last 2 weeks and it was doing this like crazy. Now that they are back on it has stopped.

Eric
completely correct, it's more of a popping sound but it's very normal. even the C5-R does this if you've had a chance to watch it race in person.

OK, so if I take the CATs off and have my cars air/fuel programed(which I

can have done very easy) this will eliminate the loud poping

Right now I have elims, and an X-pipe inplace of the resenator(SP?) and it

has a nice burble when I let off the gas but no poping, I just cant stand the

poping my friends camaro makes.
