Default Sticking Ignition

My 94 has developed an annoying new issue. When you turn the key to start it, the cylinder often returns only part way to the run position. You can’t turn it back to the run position but have to inch it towards start and then it comes back. I’m guessing that it’s the ignition switch on the steering column. Any other thoughts?

Thay make a dry lube for locks, that may temporarily help and delay lock replacement.

The “ignition switch” is the electrical part of the system, down low on the column. The “ignition lock cylinder “ is where your key goes and you turn. It could be one or the other sticking, or even the relay rod in between.

if you don’t have the tools to pull the column apart, just drop the column and pull the ignition switch. Then you can cycle the key to see if it’s sticking of any sort and clean/lube accordingly (hopefully not have to replace the lock cylinder). With the switch off you can take a Phillips head screwdriver to move the switch into all the positions and even cycle the start. If the switch hangs up, then you know it’s the switch.

Thanks both. Rttoys, yes I have the column tools for a C3 and presume they’re the same. I would MUCH rather change the ignition switch than the cylinder.

Yep, they are all the same, hell, going back to the 60’s really. Just have to deal with the air bag, which isn’t a big deal. I’d say drop the column, since it doesn’t take long and you can diag pretty easy from there.
