Yes, the Park cable on automatics works the same on manuals. The "Park" setting on an auto is the same as reverse. It is what releases the key and allows it to be removed from the column.
I couldn't get my key out because the cable stopped working so I just removed it completely. Remove the circlip on the cable that is attached to the shifter and at the very least, that won't be the reason why you can't put it in reverse.
It seems that the lever lock paw is actuated by the cable from the column, not the other way around. Turn the car off pushes on the cable and paw, put it in reverse and it locks the paw and reverse. How it prevents the key from coming out is the mystery.
