84 ongoing starter saga
my 84 has a starting problem as follows:
Stranded me at Lowe's slight click on start. Towed home, rolled of the flat bed started fine. Then would not. Bought new AC Delco gold unit installed (no spacers with old starter, so I put none) Key on start, engaged with a screeching noise. Shut down tried again same result. Gave it a few more tries (probably shouldn't I know) Then just a VERY faint click from the dash area, I think. I figure I burnt out my new starter. OK, so I bought one of those smaller starters installed yesterday, and Same result, a faint click but pretty sure not from the solenoid. Battery good, Connections good. What the heck have I done and more importantly how do I fix it? I've got 12.6 Volts at the starter I've yet to check the ignition wire on the solenoid as I need a second pair of hands to actuate ignition to see if I'm getting power to the solenoid (I suspect I am not) Could this be a Theft deterrent System malfunction? Any help appreciated!
Thanks
Joe V
