92 corvette rear end vibration
I am having an issue on my 92 LT1 6spd where at around 65MPH+ the rear end of the car starts to vibrate. I thought it was due to a wheel throwing a weight but i had the wheels rebalanced today and the guys at the dealer are pretty convinced off first glance that there may be some more serious issues with the rear end.
I have been going through the process of replacing all of the suspension bushings and did the entire rear suspension last week. While I was in there I threw new wheel hub/bearings it it since they were soaked in grease and didnt seem to roll well.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to start on this? I have turned each axle by hand and the U joints appear to be pretty tight and look OK as well
Thanks
In a safe place on the freeway, get the car up to those speeds where it vibrates, then put it in neutral.
- If vibration remains present - source could be from the rear diff, halfshafts, or driveshaft. You said you've inspected the u-joints, but did you only check the halfshafts? There will be two more on the driveshaft too. Driveshaft could throw a weight too, putting it out of balance.
- If vibration goes away - the issue could then be tied to the transmission. There's also a possibility in this scenario the vibration is tied to the engine (i.e. flywheel or flexplate out of balance). However, in this case the vibration would be present at a certain RPM, regardless of whether the car is in motion, or even in gear.
I hopped under the car today. I inspected the U joints all around and did not feel any significant amount of slop in them. Everything seems to turn freely as well.
When at highway speeds the vibration is still present while the car is in neutral. With the U joints in good shape i would assume it must be an issue with the differential or the actual drive shaft/half shafts themselves. I did not see any balancing weights on any of the shafts. Is there a specific area i should be looking?
I would also like to note that a metallic whine is present in the rear end above 40mph. Sounds like possibly a bearing or gear issues i guess
Thanks for the reply and help!
