Default Winshield replacement

Just had my appointment canceled at Safelite 30 mins prior with no explanation. I called and was told we will not work on C4 corvettes. I asked why would you quote the job and then schedule the appointment? I asked at the very beginning if they could and would replace my windshield on my 1986 Corvette and they said sure. I found another mobile shop called USA Auto Glass that will be coming out tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

I had a few C-4 windshields replaced but was in the big city, I did have to call around to find someone that would do it, from what I understand these C-4 windshields are a bitch to install and everybody says need a new seal as well to prevent leaks ,not anybody has the knowledge to replace a C-4 windshield ,make sure you get a guarantee old Bob down the road may be the guy to do this , Heard a lot from people over the years on replacing the C-4 windshield and their experiences run about 50/50 from the good to the bad .. Just saying.

First off Safelite doesn't like older cars, I was in my office parking lot and Safelite was doing one of our work trucks and I asked him since he had to come back to do some other trucks (someone BBd few of our trucks) could he order up one for my 95 Tahoe and do it. Nope he said that the truck is old and we don't do more than 5 years.
Next to do a Corvette they need to pull the roof off hopefully be able to release the "A" piller weather strip remove the side trim and the trim over the top. So you have to be prepared or possiblity of replacing the 3 trims a front weather strip. Once the trim is out then they can cut it out

x2 I took mine to a reputable local shop owner/weekend racer (when we had a track) he recommended that I pre-order those seals as it would probably be destroyed in the removal process. My appointment date got delayed as well due to the first glass that he received had a tiny little bubble in the glass. He refused it and sourced the glass from another source.

When you get someone to replace it, how much are you paying for it? I was an idiot and tried to shut the hood with a wrench in the way.

Just an FYI - it's best to supply the gasket yourself - I don't know if it is standard practice for shops to supply it. Buy the one from Corvette Rubber.

I had talked to Safelite a year or so ago and at the time they were willing to work on my ZR-1... but things could have changed. I had mine replaced by a local glass shop who specializes in older cars. They did a great job, and were able to salvage all the trim with no issues.

USA AUTOGLASS just came out and replaced my 39 year old windshield. Took 2 hours and cost 722.00 including new trim and weather stripping. Very polite guys and have done many C4 Corvettesin South Florida.

For early corvettes I think there is a better route. These cars usually need to have at least some rust rehab on the A pillar and windshield frame across the top. The problem is the windshield can not be removed because the trim is in the way. The trim can not come off because it is sandwiched / screwed between the weatherstrip track and the A pillar. To get access to the screws holding the weatherstrip track and trim the weatherstrip has to come off. I just pulled all of this apart and rehabed everything on my 87 this july. I would pull the weatherstrip, weatherstrip track, and trim, off the car and rehab any rust. Then I would have the windshield replaced (you could still drive it to a shop) telling them the trim molding is off. After that you can paint the trim molding and scrape the old weatherstrip out of the track and paint it. It is 100 times easier off the car and you WILL without doubt scratch your paint if you do not. You could also replace any dilapidated sunvisors and repaint the targa bolt covers and replace the weatherstrip. My door to dash seals were terrible as well and I replaced them.
.

Yes $778 is a lot but break it down 2 hours labor, a weather strip $180 if you needed the tracks they would probably be $75 each then the glass +-$500

I didn't do it but I paid for it. IIRC PO installed some top of the line wiper blades that stood taller than stock...
