My new to me 1990 will hardly take throttle and if you nail it, it just falls on it's face. Stuck a pressure gauge on last night and turned the switch on. It went to about 25 psi, then dropped to zero. When I started the car, it would produce no more than 24-25 psi, even when I revved it up some. I think this car sat for some time (don't know how long) and this seemed to start after I filled it up with gas. (Shell high octane).
Do you folks think I am looking at a pump issue or fuel filter or both? I pulled the vacuum hose on the regulator and there was no gas dripping, and I can't smell gas on the oil dipstick either. I'm going to try a filter first and see if that helps. Had the exhaust redone from manifolds back, and it helped some; the convertor was so black inside you couldn't see ANY light, even in bright sunlight.
Definitely do the filter because who knows what the car went through in the past, especially if you feel it has sat.
Then do the pressure test again, But don't worry fuel pump swap is not a major job just spray the bolts on the sending unit and take your time after 35 years they might give you a little Grief
Fuel pump fixed it, but changing the filter didn't hurt anything. I think someone has replaced the pump before, because the pulsation dampner was gone; just a piece of hose, which I understand doesn't hurt to do. However, I DO wish that whoever done it had at least clamped it to the pump and the metal line instead of letting it just sit there.
