Good day all, 1984 CFI Auto here. I'm sure you have all seen hundreds of posts about gaining hp from cfi. I've been browsing the forum and see a lot of posts from the early 2000s to now about 100 different ways to do things and with modern parts and such id like to know some recommendations for my preferred build. first things first: backyard mechanic, Florida so no emissions, budget:???. i plan on working on the car over time. not worried about 13s 14s 5000+hp etc. just want to enjoy modding my car for myself. id rather spend less on a street car part than more on a high performance part, which leads me to my desired mods id like to do over time. I'm planning on buying the new renegade 2.0 in the future when it comes out or buying a ported stock intake from a local old school corvette racer near me. definitely long tube headers, i don't know how to do a o2 delete but sure i could add a bung with one of those kits if they don't have it. i am planning on getting rid of the air pump and the air tubes on the exhaust manifold. my first goals are headers and intake and then maybe heads to start. like i said, just want to get a bit more out of my already fun to drive 84. sorry for long post but figured i would answer a lot of FAQ i see in these types of posts.

TL;DR
recs for simple street heads, long tubes, other mods of that difficulty. medium price for medium performance. id be happy with 230 hp

230HP is possible to get with just a heavily ported stock intake, long tubes will make it much easier.

You'll definitely want to keep the O2 sensor though, unless you like engine lights and running with bad AFR issues

There is no problem deleting AIR-pump with pipes and also EGR.

Why O2 delete? The lambda sensor is your friend to get the fuel mixture correct.
If anything you could upgrade to a WBO2 with narrow band emulator, or just as stand alone in one header and the narrow band for ECU in the other.

It is easy to modify the TB to access the fuel pressure adjustment screw. ( Yes, the stock FPR is adjustable )
That is a poor mans way to add some fuel at WOT. At low load the O2 sensor will help the ECU to relearn and reduce fuel there.

You could add a bit more cam, or 1.6 rockers. But keep the lobe separation to keep it ECU happy.

With more mods, an ECU-swap is the next logical thing to get real tuneability.

Thanks for the response to the both of you! Im sorry that was worded weird, I meant id like to keep the o2 sensor and that if the long tubes didn't have the bung for it I could get the sensor bung install kit as id like to keep the o2 sensor! Sorry again it was worded weird as I look back at it

considering that 85 corvettes 230hp have same engine, exhaust manifold, cat, mufflers, camshaft, TPI being the difference. TPI intake manifold flows about 200cfm. It's not that hard-to-get 200cfm out of a stock manifold. gasket match and opening the entrance of runner. My first ported intake manifold flowed 180cfm, worked with stock ecm. using 85 fuel pump, adjusting fuel pressure to maintain 13psi. car had no hesitation, excellent acceleration. I also ported exhaust manifolds at collector maybe flowed 125cfm. stock exhaust manifolds are restricted are collector.
Headers, ported manifold, 85 fuel pump to maintain 13psi, keep O2 sensor, maybe get heated O2 sensor, should work with stock ecm . I believe this will get there.
adding heads and camshaft will most likely need a tune and programable ecm. will need more fuel.
my flow bench is conservative. use flow numbers as a comparison.
stock head, stock manifold, stock TB's flow 135cfm.
stock head with ported manifold, no welding, stock TB's flows 160cfm
side note, stock head test showed no improvement after.400 lift.
